DPD mulls removing experience
The Dallas City Council is considering dropping the experience requirement for becoming a police officer.
To become a Dallas police officer, candidates must possess college credit, experience in the U.S. Armed Forces, or a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement peace officer license.
This compares to places like Austin and San Antonio, where only a high school diploma or GED is needed, or stricter cities, like Arlington and Plano, where a bachelor’s degree is a prerequisite to joining.
This is not the first time the City has considered making it easier to become a police officer.
Earlier this year, in February, The Dallas Express reported that the Dallas Police Department (DPD) was looking at removing certain disqualifiers from its hiring process.
At the time, Deputy Chief Wiliam Griffith did not specify those disqualifiers.
The proposed changes stem from a shortage of sworn officers in the City.
Dallas has struggled to attract and retain law enforcement for the past eight years.
On February 12, Dallas Police Department’s Public Information Officer Jennifer Pryor spoke to The Dallas Express earlier this year, saying the DPD had 3,044 sworn officers on staff, far lower than the 4,000 a City report had previously said was needed for a City the size of Dallas.
If the new proposal goes through, no experience will be needed, only a high school diploma or GED. Currently, candidates can only join if they transfer from another department, have served at least three years in the armed forces, or have earned 45-60 college credit hours, depending on age, with a 2.0 GPA.
“We are competing for limited talent with limited interest in a sworn position… It’s like sales; the more you put in the funnel, the better results you will have hiring quality candidates on the back end,” said Jarred Davis with the City’s civil service department, per Fox 4 KDFW.
Not everyone is on board with the proposal, including Councilwoman Cara Mendelsohn.
“I’m just going to say it. I don’t like this proposal at all… I don’t want us to lower our standards for police officers,” she said.
“We are not talking about any kind of job here that is anyone off the street doing a file clerk job,” added Mendelsohn. “We are giving someone a gun and the ability to kill other people. I won’t support lowering it.”

Joel Edgerton has been a guy with many big breaks from his role in KINKY BOOTS to ANIMAL KINGDOM, THE GREAT GATSBY to his *U.S*. writing/directing debut THE GIFT, Edgerton and his older brother stuntman/director Nash (GRINGO, MR. IN BETWEEN) have made a name for themselves stateside.
Now four years after attending the Venice Film Festival for the Scott Cooper's BLACK MASS (Johnny Depp, Dakota Johnson, Benedict Cumberbatch), Joel Edgerton returns to Venezia with for THE KING. Co-written by Edgerton and his ANIMAL KINGDOM writer/director David Michôd, THE KING also reunites them with their AK co-star Ben Mendelsohn.
Last year I feel Edgerton wasn't recognized enough for BOY ERASED which got lost in the alliterative jumble that was BOY ERASED, BEAUTIFUL BOY and BEN IS BACK which starred Timothee Lucas Hedges Chalamet.
I do thank him for putting Hedges and Xavier Dolan in a film together, though.
I hope Edgerton is noticed for his work in/on THE KING but I do hope he gets another leading man role because as quiet as its kept I was really loving his chemistry with his LOVING co-star Ruth Negga and his RED SPARROW co-star Jennifer Lawrence.
Also, I wouldn't mind seeing him in briefs again.

Untogether (2019)
Untogether is the story of Nick (Jamie Dornan) and Andrea (Jemima Kirke) whose one night stand evolves into something more, though the exact parameters are blurry and undefined. He is a doctor and author whose heroics in the Middle East gained him international fame. She is a writing prodigy fully consumed with destructive vices, navigating Los Angeles without a driver's license or credit card and sharing a home with her sister Tara (Lola Kirke).
Meanwhile, Tara is dealing with relationship issues of her own as she slowly slips away from her boyfriend Martin (Ben Mendelsohn), who gave up his Australian fame as a rock 'n' roll god to be with her. Her way of acting out is to lose herself in religion and seek solace in a charismatic Rabbi (Billy Crystal).
Directed by: Emma Forrest
Starring: Jemima Kirke, Lola Kirke, Jamie Dornan, Ben Mendelsohn, Billy Crystal, Jennifer Grey, Scott Caan, Alice Eve
Release date: February 8, 2019

Untogether
Untogether [trailer]
A recently sober writer whose career has stalled since she published her debut novel several years ago, strikes up an affair with a doctor-turned-writer. At the same time, her sister who is dating an aging rock star, finds herself inexorably drawn to a politically engaged rabbi.
Maybe I was just in the wrong mood. But with the exception of Billy Crystal's rabbi, there's no likable character. It's unclear why the couples are attracted to each other, all characters mainly just seem to bicker constantly, and there barely is a plot.
On the plus side, it should help me keeping the Kirke sisters apart. And remembering that they are born in the UK.

#1yrago Ten years after Juneau ditched water fluoridation, kids racked up an average of $300/each in extra dental bills
It's been ten years since the people of Juneau, Alaska succumbed to conspiracy theories and voted to ruin their kids' teeth by removing fluoride from the drinking water, and it shows.
A BMC Oral Health study by Jennifer Meyer (U Alaska), Vasileios Margaritis (Walden U) and Aaron Mendelsohn (Walden U) found that, on average, the families of unfluoridated kids of Juneau paid an extra $300 to have preventable cavities drilled and filled.
Fluoride costs pennies.

Disney Investor Day: tutte le novità → Marvel Studios
Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman e Tessa Thompson riprendono i propri ruoli, insieme a Christian Bale, che interpreta l’antagonista Gorr the God Butcher.
Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania sarà diretto dal regista di Ant-Man Peyton Reed.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 è previsto per il 2023 con il regista James Gunn
Fantastic Four, diretto da Jon Watts.
DISNEY + (SERIES)
What If…? capovolge la sceneggiatura dell’Universo Cinematografico Marvel, rielaborando in modi inaspettati eventi celebri dei film.

Books 2019-20
I didn’t bother with one of these booklist blog posts last year but I got curious as to what books I’d read this year. I don’t write a regular book blog so here are some short comments on the books that I’ve read starting in January 2019, more or less
Virginie Déspentes’ Vernon Subutex 1 & 2 made me feel that she is the author who best expresses in fiction a clear vision of the world in the first fifth of the late capitalist 21st Century, the first volume in particular.
I haven’t read a lot of poetry this year but I did begin 2019 with Pey Pey Oh’s Pictograph and Shadowplay by Phillip Gross; Lutz Seilor’s In Field Latin (thanks to translator, Alexander Booth) Later in the year, Alexander Booth’s own collection Insulae. All treasures. Another poetry pleasure was a re-read of Ifor Thomas’s Body Beautiful, a vision of the body as it the writer faces cancer. This is also the year that I delved deeply into Cavafy (which led me to re-read Durrell’s Justine.) This poetry created for me a feeling of space, opening up areas away from the rich density of prose.
After a second Moroccan visit, prose reading continued to circle the Levant: Abdellatif’s The Law of Inheritance; Olivia Manning’s The Levant Trilogy; Amin Malouf’s Ports of Call; and a new Mathías Énard Tell Them of Battles (translated by Charlotte Mandell).
Not so much reading on the noir/crime front this year but John Lincoln Williams’ Fade to Grey was an intriguing and action-filled investigation that exposed a complex Cardiff/Bristol underworld. James Lee Burke’s In the Moon of Red Ponies managed to skewer undercover American politics and arms trading while involved in a story of an Indigenous American on the run for crimes he may or may not have committed.
A group of writers that kind of fall together subject-wise are Chris Kraus, Olivia Laing, and Maggie Nelson: New York, Kathy Acker, S&M, Artaud, sex positive, art-queer. Have to include Cosey Fanny Tutti’s Art Sex Music here, too.
To put another couple of books/writers/artists together with them: Dreamweapon by Angus MacLise; and LouReed: A Life, by Anthony DeCurtis. They deal with directions in which I’m interested in taking my own creative work to some extent: nonfiction and performance art, particularly Butoh. After training in Butoh with Yuri Nagaoka and Seisaku, I picked up the anthology, Inside, Japanese women write on Japanese women. Inside covers in short fiction every stage of life from birth to menopause. Yuri’s daughter, Rio Minamoto, who has won a plethora of Japan’s most prestigious prizes, has a story in this, the only piece of her work that I could find in translation.
After re-reading the hardback copy of ICE by Anna Kavan, I read and re-read a lot more Anna Kavan, inspired by that and the Machines in the Head anthology from Peter Owen Publishers. I reviewed Machines in the Head for 3AM magazine. In connection with the review article, I also read Rhys Davies’s Honeysuckle Girl, a novel based on Kavan’s life. https://www.3ammagazine.com/3am/missives-from-a-parallel-dimension/
Speaking of anthologies, I was pleased to have story – Our Lady of Penrhys – in High Spirits: A Round of Drinking Stories, edited by Jonathan Taylor and Karen Stephens.
Outside of any reading pattern, I read three by Cynan Jones, Richard Hughes’ A High Wind in Jamaica (kind of like the Famous Five on an acid trip), two by the extraordinary Christa Wolf. Sam Shepard’s Spy of the First Person, Patti Smith’s The Year of the Monkey, Ann Quin’s Berg. Wayne McCauley’s Simpson Returns. Jean-Luc Nancy’s The Fall of Sleep.
Happy New Year Everybody
